This summer, Hamilton will be playing in KeyBank State Theatre, the top-tier venue of Cleveland and the greatest possible entertainment venue for this spectacular Musical. The critically acclaimed and multi-award winning performance goes on to tell its excellent story from place to place all over the Nation.
Debuting off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not instantly the Broadway smash that you will see today. Lin-Manuel Miranda has talked honestly about its inspiration, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda saying that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That one single performance resulted in praise and a well-earned standing ovation from the audience at the time, including former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and directly led to Miranda’s production of the Hamilton musical we see today.
Because of his history in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also found influences from other award-winning theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which follows a similar theme that tells the history of a struggle, and succeeding from that struggle, instead of the traditional musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very uplifting and happy. Similarly Hamilton, being about the difficulties arising as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who climbed the ladder and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the utmost respect to its source material, the Musical shows us both the good and bad in Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only showing us a peek into his character and struggle, but also his impact and effect in being able to greatly shape North America during his lifetime.
By telling this story, Hamilton continues to prove its importance in American culture and even on the international stage, confronting themes and topics that are highly relevant not only to the Country, but also around the world. Even the use of musical styles of hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the shows score has cemented its place in pop culture, making it one of the most popular hit Cleveland musicals today.
